Before connecting a cable, the cables outer jacket is removed and the enclosed hook-up wires exposed. This process is called stripping. Thereafter, a small portion of insulation is removed from the end of the stranded conductors. The length of insulation to be stripped is, for example, determined by the dimensions of the insulated wire end ferrules, which are to be connected to the conductors.

Since it is of crucial importance in this process that the conductors are not damaged, the use of stripping tools is recommended.
