The level of media can be measured to different operating principles. Two of the most relevant ones in industry are presented below.
Capacitive level measurement
On the one hand there is level measurement by means of capacitive sensors. These sensors are based on the capacitor principle and generate an electrical field at the active zone. The medium to be detected (dielectric material) increases the capacitance which leads to a change in the output status of the sensor. The level is determined either without direct contact with the medium, e.g. through non-metallic tank walls or on bypass pipes (capacitive sensors) or in direct contact with the medium on the active face (capacitive limit sensors).
Conventional level sensors operating to the pulse transit time principle
The use of conventional level sensors is another option to determine the level. The sensor operates to the principle of guided wave radar and belongs to the process sensors. The level is measured by direct contact with the medium and using electromagnetic pulses in the nanosecond range.
